What actually makes a mobile RPG worth your time

Mobile RPGs are everywhere, and most of them are variations on the same grind. But every so often one gets the fundamentals right, and lately I've been trying to figure out what those fundamentals actually are.

The first is respect for your session length. A good mobile RPG lets you make meaningful progress in ten minutes without punishing you for not playing for three hours. Save often, make checkpoints forgiving, and don't tie progression to staying online.

The second is combat that asks you to think. Playing Emberfall Chronicle recently reminded me how much better a game feels when fights are small puzzles instead of stat-check button mashing. Positioning and timing beat raw numbers every time.

The third, and the one most games forget, is characters worth following. I'll forgive a clunky menu if the party banter makes me smile. Story is what keeps me coming back once the novelty of the systems wears off.

If a mobile RPG nails those three, I'm in for the long haul. If it misses them, no amount of flashy art will keep it on my phone.
