Strategy games that actually fit a commute

April 6, 2026 · Mikael Sørensen

The classic problem with strategy games on mobile is time. The genre wants you to settle in and plan, but a phone is something you use in scattered bursts. The best ones solve this instead of ignoring it.

Tidewall Command is a good example of a game that bends toward the format, with a pause-and-plan feature that lets you freeze a match and come back when your stop isn't thirty seconds away. It's a small thing that makes a long genre playable in short pieces.

If you want something even shorter, turn-based skirmish games are your friend. A single battle can wrap in five minutes, and you can close the app between turns without losing anything.

My general advice: look for games that save mid-match and that don't punish you for stepping away. A strategy game that demands your full uninterrupted attention is a bad fit for a bus, no matter how good it is at home.

Don't be afraid to lose your first few matches, either. Most of these games only click once you've failed enough to understand what they're really asking.
