Arcade racers aren't dead, they just moved to your pocket

People keep saying arcade racing is a dead genre, killed off by simulation and open-world driving games. On consoles, maybe. But on phones the arcade racer is alive and well, and honestly thriving.

The reason is that the format fits. Touch controls are terrible for simulation but perfect for the exaggerated, forgiving handling of an arcade racer. Tilt to steer, tap to boost, and you're off.

Neon Slipstream is the one I keep going back to. Short tracks, instant restarts, and a sense of speed that doesn't care about realism. It's exactly what the genre was always about, dressed up for a touchscreen.

If you grew up feeding coins into racing cabinets, there's a lot here to love. The spirit survived, it just changed where it lives.

My one tip: try tilt controls even if you default to tap. On most of these games the tilt option feels far more natural once you adjust.
